Resistance Training - Health or Hype?

Woman walking on a treadmill with a weighted vest build strength and bone density.

What’s all the hype about resistance training and creatine?

It turns out that what has been well understood by male bodybuilders is also a best-kept secret for female longevity.

Why Resistance Training Matters for Women Over 30

Women naturally begin to lose muscle mass and bone density around the age of 30. These losses accelerate around 40-45 years and continue through menopause and the post menopause years. However, to minimize these losses that can cause fragility, women do not have to become female bodybuilders (nor look like them) to be healthy. Recent studies now show women using creatine + strength training gained more lean mass and greater improvements in bone density markers than women who strength-trained alone. It’s not hype!

A Spiritual Perspective on Caring for Your Body

I like to keep things simple and resist the rabbit-holes of fitness fads. I look for the evidence and the hard-core truths to guide me. When it comes to my physical body, in addition to the recent scientific evidence, the scriptures teach us that our bodies are not our own; they are a temple belonging to God. As a result, we have a responsibility to take care of our bodies, treating them with reverence and honoring God through them. “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself” 1 Corinthians 6:19.

I think of it this way, our muscles and bones are the brick and mortar of our bodies; “temples” where the Holy Spirit dwells within us, and shapes our hearts toward God. We must optimize the bodies we are given.

Kelly’s Simple Weekly Strength Routine

Recently, I have incorporated resistance training and creatine intake into a simple daily routine:

  • I walk 3-5 times weekly for 45-50 minutes wearing a weighted vest (5–8% of body weight)

  • I perform 4 resistance exercises (lifting weights) in 30 minutes 2- 3 x weekly.

  • I take a creatine supplement every morning.

My motivation? I am doing my best to build a temple for the Divine spirit 🕊️🙏

God Bless & Be Well ❤️

Kelly
