The One Question That Will Keep You Moving All Summer
Want to know the question that's kept me moving through busy schedules, vacations, long workdays, and seasons where motivation felt nowhere to be found?
It's not, "Did I work out today?"
It's, "How can I move my body today?"
At first glance, it might not seem like much. But this simple question has completely changed the way I think about exercise, and it may do the same for you.
Why We Struggle to Stay Active During Busy Seasons
Many of us grew up viewing movement through a very specific lens. Exercise meant a gym membership, a fitness class, a run, or a workout program. It was something scheduled into our calendars and measured by minutes, calories, or how sweaty we got. While there's absolutely nothing wrong with structured exercise, it can create an unintended problem: if we can't fit in the workout we planned, we often do nothing at all.
Maybe your day gets away from you. A meeting runs long. Your kids need something. You're traveling. You're exhausted. Suddenly, your planned workout doesn't happen, and it feels like you've failed for the day. When movement becomes all or nothing, it's easy to feel like you're constantly falling behind.
Everyday Movement Is Exercise, Too
But movement was never meant to be confined to a gym or a workout app. Our bodies were designed to move throughout the day in countless ways. Walking the dog. Pulling weeds in the garden. Swimming with your kids. Riding bikes around the neighborhood. Carrying groceries. Taking the stairs. Stretching before bed. These moments may not look like traditional exercise, but they still matter.
A Healthier Way to Think About Movement
In fact, one of the healthiest mindset shifts we can make is recognizing that movement isn't just something we do for our bodies. It's something we do with our bodies. Movement can help clear your mind after a stressful day, boost your energy when you're feeling sluggish, improve your mood, and help you stay connected to the people and activities you love.
Summer is actually the perfect season to embrace this mindset. The weather is warmer, the days are longer, and opportunities to move naturally exist all around us. A walk after dinner. A trip to the farmers’ market. A game of catch in the backyard. A bike ride with your family. An evening spent gardening. A walk around the soccer fields while your child practices. These moments might not feel like a workout, but they absolutely contribute to a healthy, active life.
Ask Yourself One Simple Question
That's why I keep coming back to the question: How can I move my body today?
It meets you exactly where you are. Some days your answer might be a strength workout or fitness class. Other days it might be a twenty-minute walk, a quick stretch session, or simply choosing to spend more time outdoors. The beauty is that there is no wrong answer.
We believe movement should add to your life, not become another source of guilt or pressure. The goal isn't to earn your food, punish yourself for what you ate over the weekend, or chase a perfect routine. The goal is to care for the body you've been given and build habits that fit into your real life.
So the next time your schedule doesn't allow for the workout you planned, resist the urge to throw in the towel. Instead, ask yourself one simple question: How can I move my body today?
The answer might be simpler than you think, and over time, those small moments of movement add up to something powerful. Not just a healthier body, but a fuller, more active life.
