10 Months Sober: What I’ve Learned 🙏

On December 8, 2024, I made a decision that would quietly but profoundly change my life — to go one full year without alcohol.

For me, drinking was mostly a social or weekend habit. But over time, I started noticing how much it was affecting both my physical and mental health. So, I decided to take a break. What started as an experiment has turned into one of the most impactful decisions I’ve made for my well-being.

Here’s what I’ve learned 10 months in:

1. Alcohol is an easy band-aid

When stress, anxiety, anger, or sadness hit, alcohol can feel like a quick fix — but it’s only temporary. It doesn’t heal pain; it hides it. And over time, what’s buried tends to grow. Facing emotions head-on has been uncomfortable, but also incredibly freeing.

2. Our culture normalizes an unhealthy habit

We’ve built a society where not drinking is seen as unusual. People often ask “why aren’t you drinking?” instead of “why are we all expected to?” That shift in perspective has been eye-opening. Choosing not to drink isn’t weird — it’s brave.

3. Sobriety brings your emotions to the surface

Without the numbing effect of alcohol, unprocessed emotions rise up fast. It’s hard work — really hard — but it’s also where the healing happens. I’ve experienced some of the biggest improvements in my mental health by finally facing what I used to bury.

4. There are so many good NA options

Sometimes, I just want a crisp beer on a summer evening 😄 — and thankfully, the non-alcoholic world has leveled up. @athleticbrewing and @gobrewing are two of my favorites. They make it easy to enjoy the ritual without the regret.

5. No more hangovers 👏

This one speaks for itself. There’s nothing like waking up on a Saturday morning — no alarm, fully rested, clear-headed, and ready to actually enjoy the day.

6. A healthier body and mind

Without the extra empty calories and inflammation, I’ve noticed better recovery, more balanced hormones, and faster muscle growth. My workouts feel stronger, and my energy is consistent throughout the week.

7. I experience life more vividly

I’m present now. I’m not numbing or distracting myself — I’m in the moment. Whether it’s a deep conversation, a sunset, or just laughing with friends, everything feels more real.

8. Social events get easier

I used to worry that weddings, parties, or vacations would feel awkward without a drink in my hand. Now, I can honestly say it’s no big deal. Connection doesn’t depend on alcohol — and the people who matter don’t care what’s in your glass.

9. My faith has grown

The Bible talks about being sober-minded for a reason. Alcohol clouds judgment and weakens discernment. Removing it has brought more clarity, peace, and connection in my relationship with God.

10. Doing something hard builds confidence

There’s power in proving to yourself that you can do something challenging — and stick with it. Whatever your “thing” is, go for it. The growth that comes from discipline and discomfort is worth it.

So, what’s next?

I’m committed to finishing what I started and reaching that one-year mark. Beyond that, I’m not entirely sure — but I do know that alcohol will remain drastically reduced in my life.Because I’ve seen how good it feels on the other side. 🌿
