Healthy Snacking on the Road: Why It’s Hard, But So Worth It
This week, B and I hit the road for Outer Banks, NC for a week-long vacation! As I drove through the winding roads of the West Virginia mountains, something struck me: nearly every few miles, another fast food sign popped up. Burger chains, fried chicken spots, pizza places—all calling to tired, hungry travelers like a siren song. And honestly, it hit me: no wonder we’re facing a health epidemic.
Healthy options aren’t just scarce on the road — they’re practically nonexistent. Unless you bring them with you, you’re stuck between greasy and greasier. If you're lucky, maybe there's a banana at a gas station that's not too bruised or some stale hard-boiled eggs (I got the ick just typing that). But otherwise? You're out of luck.
This isn’t about judgment — it’s about reality. Finding and choosing nutritious food while traveling takes intentional effort, planning, and yes, often more money. It’s not the default. But if you want to feel good, avoid bloating, fatigue, and stomach issues (especially when you're stuck in a car for hours like I was), the effort is absolutely worth it.
Knowing my stomach is sensitive, and honestly just wanting to feel good, I packed a few of my favorite road snacks before we left:
Jackson’s Sweet Potato Chips (cooked in healthy oils + great flavor varieties)
Simply Nature Coconut Keto Clusters (low-sugar but sweet enough to satisfy)
80% Dark Chocolate (a little bit goes a long way)
Mixed Nuts (healthy fats help keep hunger at bay)
Peanut Butter Sandwiches on Multigrain Bread (classic, filling, and a no fridge required meal)
Protein Powder (easy to throw in oatmeal, coffee, or water for a quick protein option)
These weren’t just snacks, they were my health insurance for the road. Without them, I would’ve either gone hungry or caved into a meal that would’ve left me uncomfortable, tired, or worse.
So, next time you’re hitting the road, do yourself a favor and pack with intention! You deserve to feel good, even when you're hundreds of miles from your kitchen. Your health is worth the extra effort. Every time.
