Why I’m Adding Running Back Into My Routine

After a long stretch focused mostly on strength training, I’ve decided it’s time to switch things up, and I’m officially back in race training mode! I’ve signed up for a 5K in May and a Half Marathon in October! I’ve completed a 5K, 10K, and Half in the past, but running hasn’t been a regular part of my training for a while.

For the last few years, I’ve been strength training consistently 4–5 times a week and getting plenty of steps in through daily walks, but endurance training has taken a back burner. The mental and physical demands of running, especially longer distances, challenge me in a whole new way, and honestly, I’m excited to get back into that.

What’s Changing in My Routine

To support my new goals, I’m adjusting my training schedule:

Old Routine:

4–5x/week strength training + daily walks

New Routine:
3x/week strength training (through the Anywhere Fitness App) + 2x/week interval runs

The strength workouts I follow are all built into the Anywhere Fitness app, which makes it easy to stay consistent even with a shift in goals. I’ll be focusing on full-body, functional strength while using running intervals to gradually build endurance.

Why Combine Strength and Running?

The combo of strength + running has so many benefits:

  • Strength helps with injury prevention, improved stride efficiency, and overall power.

  • Running boosts cardiovascular health, stamina, and mental grit.

  • Together, they create a more balanced, resilient athlete - physically and mentally.

I’m excited to see how layering in endurance will complement the foundation I’ve built with strength over the years.

What’s Staying the Same: Nutrition

My nutrition will mostly stay the same for now. I’ll continue to focus on adequate calories and hitting my protein target (because muscle repair and energy are key, especially with the increased output). As my long runs ramp up later in the summer, I’ll reassess carb intake and hydration strategies to support those extended sessions.
