Discerning His Word

How God Speaks

Sometimes, Jesus just makes me laugh! As I work at discernment, learning to “listen” for God’s direction in my life, I have come to understand that it’s never quite the same. Sometimes, He nudges, so gently that I am not certain if it’s just me wanting to believe it’s Him or if it IS indeed Him?! Sometimes His voice comes through another person speaking His truth to my often-distracted mind and nearly deaf ears. More frequently, He “speaks” to me when I am writing down my thoughts as I journal about my dreams, my fears, my confusion, and my gratitude. And then there are times, like this week, when He might as well have slapped me upside the head with His guidance. He makes me laugh when He is not subtle at all!

His Word for Me

The word “surrender” had been on my mind for some months. Through my writing and keynote speaking this year, I have realized that letting go of control and “Letting God” is an easier said than done approach to greater peace. It requires a surrender of your will to His will.

I had the opportunity this fall to meet hundreds of women through our Women’s Wellness Speakers Series – where we expanded upon Mel Robbins’ Let Them Theory and explored an added dimension of spiritual wellness. The approach “Let Them, Let Me, Let God” is about taking personal responsibility for your thoughts and actions without trying to control others or an outcome. This is challenging because, as human beings, we are hardwired to control situations.  It is a basic survival instinct.  Resisting the urge to control and “Let God” requires trust in God and a surrender of your will to His will.

As I have been praying about letting go of hurts and control and wondering if I was being called to sharpen my surrender, a book just appeared in the mail, addressed to no one, but definitely for someone - me! “The Way of Surrender” by Vic Clesceri (2025). Talk about being direct?! This is Jesus’s kind and gentle way of screaming to get my attention. Thank you, Jesus!

More than just Listening

Discerning is not just hearing, but also taking action. For me, “surrender” this year will require study, prayer, reading scripture, and sharing in community. Not randomly, but rather with thoughtful intention and curiosity about what He wants from me.

Awakening

This yearly practice of discerning a word as a focus for my attention has resulted in a deeper awakening of my soul. With quiet assurance, I am growing in trust. I am realizing that I am not alone, I will never be abandoned, and I am enough! No matter what comes my way, He never gives me more than I can handle because He carries me through it and calls me closer. The closer I am, the lighter my burdens and the greater is my peace. Slowly, I awaken, and it becomes a way of being.

Do you have a “word” tugging on your heart? Answer that divine invitation to focus your attention. It’s not a fleeting thought! Write down that word and lean into the voice that speaks so only you can hear.

With deepest gratitude and unbridled enthusiasm, I invite you to join me on this journey this year - sure to awaken our souls and transform our hearts.

Be Well ❤️
